Photos: Icons of Istanbul

Travel the World: Icons of Istanbul – This photo was taken from the second floor of the Hagia Sophia were the grandeur and splendor of the architecture can be most appreciated. The “floating” chandeliers, which were added in 1847 under the order of Sultan Abdülmecid, are arguably of the most impressive additions to this religious icon.

Photographed from a small window on the second floor of the Hagia Sophia facing south towards the Blue Mosque, the view from here is worth every bit of the struggle to hoist yourself  high enough to peer out.
